Inside and outside, “we” and “they” – how legitimate are demarcations? Can we afford to seal ourselves off; even more: Can we take responsibility for it? May the sovereignty of other states be encroached upon, and if so, when?

Our time increasingly demands answers. That’s precisely when art is needed – art that expands, reflects, and criticizes discourse with installations, interventions, and works; art that asks questions when the answers become too simple. And that’s exactly what Freiburg-based artist Robin Gommel does again and again.

FORTRESS EUROPE

Six billion euros for Fortress Europe: the sum that the EU will transfer to Turkey as part of the refugee deal. Between homeland and hope lies the Mediterranean Sea, borders, police and military. And six billion euros: this is also the monetary value of the banknotes used to build the walls erected in the FORTRESS EUROPE installation. It raises questions about humanity, justice and political action – why borders? And where do our own borders lie?
